Directions: the Refuge and Visitor Center are 7 miles south of Alamo, TX on FM 907 about 1/4 mile east on Hwy. 281

Tuesday – Saturday 8:30 AM: Bird walks

Wednesdays 10:00AM: Butterfly walks

Fri & Sat 9:30 AM, Sun 1 PM:  Nature Tram tours. Please come to the Santa Ana NWR Visitor Center to purchase your tickets at least 20 minutes before departure.

Roma Bluffs World Birding Center (956-849-4930)
Located at 610 N. Portscheller St, Roma, TX

Junior Ranger Programs:  FREE for children ages 12 and under.  Activities include animal tracks/molds, pelts, skulls, microscopes, owl pellets, water testing, games and more.  Participants need to bring – lunch, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, hat and insect repellent.  Registration form to be completed upon arrival.  Call to reserve a spot 956-849-4930, or 956-784-7575.

Laguna Atascosa NWR • 956.748.3607
Directions: the Refuge is 18 miles east of Rio Hondo, TX on FM 106

Twilight Tour: Discover the refuge habitats and see which animals become active at night on this 2 ½ hour guided tour on our climate controlled bus. Bring binoculars and jackets. July 13 and 27, 7:00 pm – 9:30pm.  Call 956-748-3607 ext. 111 to make your reservation. FREE with $3 entrance fee. The vehicle is wheelchair accessible.

Kayak the Laguna Madre: Enjoy time outside in nature with friends and family. Learn basic kayaking skills while investigating the plants and animals of the laguna. All equipment provided. $30/adult, $25/ ages 8-12. Call 956-748-3607 ext. 111 to make your reservation. July – September; Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 8:00AM-1:00PM.

Animal Olympics: Let’s go outside this summer! A challenge course will be set up around the visitor center, in which families can learn about wildlife and get some exercise at the same time. Prizes for all kids completing the course. Free with $3 entrance fee. July 20, 9:00AM-3:00PM.

Nature Storytime: Enjoy a nature story and related activity in the shaded gazebo. Families with kids of all ages are welcome. Free with $3 entrance fee. July 6 & 20, 10:00AM.

 Other News
  • Entrance fees for Santa Ana and Laguna Atascosa NWRs are waived the first Sunday of every month!
  • Duck Stamps are now on sale at Santa Ana and Laguna Atascosa visitor centers.  $15 cash or check and free entry to all national wildlife refuges from July, 2013  – June 2014.  Ninety-eight cents of every dollar spent on this stamp goes directly to conservation.
  • Laguna Atascosa Hunt applications will be available this week  – in the visitor center or online at www.friendsofsouthtexasrefuges.org   They will be accepted starting August 1.
  • The 2013 Rio Grande Valley – Texas Nature Challenge will start August 10.  More details coming
